Boats have a lot going for them. They are some of the fastest boats
available to consumers today. Baja has been in the business of making
high-performance sports boats for decades now. They take great pains to

Baja Boats’ engineers analyze everything about their boats.
They look at water impact, wind pressure, and the movement of the boats
in the water. The engineers’ methods come from universities,
NASA, and the scientific community in general. They really

One way they make their boats better is by using a NASA technique
called Finite Element Analysis. This uses special software to calculate
impact issues. The designs followed, materials used, and construction
methods are all evaluated.
After Finite Element Analysis, Baja Boats are designed that can

The goal is to get the best strength for the amount of weight of the

Analyzer to make sure that the design works the way it should.

aluminum fishing boats that we are talking about here.
Another type of testing is carried out on Baja Boats at the University
of Michigan. They have a wind tunnel testing facility. Baja uses it to
find out about wind resistance of their speed boat models. By
identifying places where the wind causes drag, Baja can redesign boats
to have more speed.
The University of Michigan also has a wave-making water tank. Baja
Boats uses it to check the way the boat moves in the water. Engineers
attach sensors to a scale model of the craft. An arm helps the
miniature boat to ride atop the water. As it does, the sensors measure
bounce and drag on the hull. Video cameras catch everything, and
engineers can change details to accommodate their findings.
A special method of laminating makes the boats stronger and more
lightweight. This is called SCRIMP, or resin infusion. The
closed mold technology allows for adjustments and reinforcements to be
made based on Finite Element Analysis. The boat will turn out with more
speed and durability.
In-gel graphics are used on Baja Boats to give them their unique look.

about the paint standing out on the surface of the boat. It is made
into the gel-coat of the hull.
