When buying used motor homes,
it is necessary to
look them over carefully. You need to find out if there are any
problems, just as you would if you were buying a used car. There are
plenty of good deals out there on quality used RVs, but you have to
know how to judge them.
1. Check out the engine. You will not get
very far if you do not
have a good working engine. You should not only be assured that this
particular engine seems to be running well. You should also do some
research to find out what the overall performance has been for that
make and model of engine.
2. Check out the water tanks. Make sure you
have good pressure for
both hot and cold water. See that the water heater works. If the tanks
are intact, your running water should work well for your shower and
sink.
3. Look at the waste disposal system. Make
sure there are no cracks.
When you are driving down the road it is no time to find out that your
waste system is leaking. This can be a major problem for used motor
homes that are not well maintained.
4. Determine what powers your kitchen. If
you have a microwave and
refrigerator, find out if they are run by a generator. If so, look at
the generator to make sure it is functioning properly. If your stove
and refrigerator work off of gas instead, make sure that system is
intact.
5. Try to determine how well insulated the
motor home is. If you go
inside on a cold day and heat it up, you will notice if it seems to
cool off too fast. On a hot day, you can do the same with the air
conditioning. Cool it off and see how long it takes to heat back up.
6. Make sure the RV suits the needs of your
family. Get a floor plan
to calculate exactly how many people the RV will reasonably sleep.
Sometimes used motor homes are advertised to sleep a certain number,
but you need the floor plan to be sure.
7. Try the windows. You may be heating or
cooling part of the time,
but you will want your windows to open at any time they are needed. If
you were to burn something on your stove, you would want to open a
window to let out the smoke. Some older used motor homes have windows
that are stuck shut.
8. Check the upholstery and bedding. It may
be worth the investment
to buy new upholstery or a mattress if you are getting a great deal on
a quality used Fleetwood
RV. The nice thing about used motor homes is that you get to
decorate them yourself.
Investigate any used motor homes you are
seriously thinking of
purchasing. You need to know if the major systems are in good working
order. You can take care of any minor problems if you are aware of
them. It just takes a little thought to find the used motor
home of your dreams.
